As an optics manufacturer, we spend a lot of time testing and shooting various rifles and calibers. Some days it’s a pleasant run through a box of .22s. On other outings we often find ourselves behind the big guns like a .300 Remington Ultra Mags. In 2007, the 6.5 Creedmoor entered the shooting world and has seen a meteoric rise unlike any other rifle caliber in history. The 6.5 was developed by Hornady as a high-power competition cartridge capable of making any shot the rifle range has to offer. In fact, it is the first production cartridge ever developed from the ground up to be a true match cartridge. Hornady’s intent was to give competitive shooters a factory loaded cartridge that would allow them to compete, and win, in high level tournaments. The 6.5 Creedmoor was at the same time a huge discount in ammunition prices for many shooters.

From the Range to the Woods

It didn’t take very long for hunters to take notice of the caliber that has firmly rooted itself in precision accuracy with light recoil. Hornady is now selling a round specifically designed with the hunter in mind. “Ballistically, it’s a bit more powerful than the 6.5 Swede,” said David E. Petzal, Rifles Editor of Field & Stream. “And in its century of existence, the Swede has killed everything, everywhere.” He also goes on to state that the 6.5 Creedmoor will “do nicely for elk and moose” with a 140-grain bullet.

The 6.5 Creedmoor’s versatility derives from the fact that it can be used across multiple big-game animals. And it is suitable for a kid or a seasoned hunter. It’s great in the woods. It’s fun on the range. We have no doubt that more and more rifle manufacturers are going to include the 6.5 Creedmoor in their lineup for years to come.

6.5mm vs 300 Win. Mag.

The big deal with the Creedmoor is that it is capable of generating velocities and a trajectory approaching the 300 Winchester Magnum with significantly less recoil. This is based on the heavier bullets in the 300 Win Mag and the lighter bullets in the 6.5. Not only does this make it a great precision long range competitive round, but it also makes it an excellent choice for hunting. 

When compared to the popular .308 Winchester, the recoil is reduced, making a long day at the range much more pleasurable. Many people feel that the 6.5mm projectile provides the best aerodynamic ballistic profile of any diameter bullet designed today. The result is in high ballistic coefficients (BC) and superior long range results as well as reduced wind deflection. Since it has an overall length of 2.825 inches, it can be chambered in short action rifles and AR 10 platforms alike.

The first production rifle manufacturer to introduce a model chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor based on the AR 10 platform was DPMS. Ruger followed shortly thereafter with the M77 Bolt rifle. Today, there are numerous production rifles chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. Countless custom gun makers are building them as well, providing a multitude of options.
