The Convenience of Scope Throw Levers

Scope throw levers are an important component for shooters who need to quickly adjust the magnification of their optic.

The Convenience of Scope Throw Levers. It was a state of panic. At least, in the moment, that’s what it seemed to be. Years later it registers as yet another missed opportunity in a long life of deer hunting the hardwoods of the Southeastern United States.

We’d gotten an unusually cold snap the week before Christmas, which conveniently coincided with the rut. I called out of work and headed to the woods. By late morning I couldn’t feel my toes. Early afternoon, my fingers. But as any serious deer hunter knows, these aren’t reasons to head in.

The buck came through at sunset following a doe that was on a path to the foot of my tree stand. A quick glance through the binoculars told me he was a shooter and at a mere 75 yards I raised my rifle and leveled the crosshairs. Except I couldn’t find the buck in the scope.

As they closed the distance I frantically tried with a gloved, numb hand to decrease the magnification on my rifle scope. The ring felt like it was moving but with each look back through the scope it became apparent that my hand was merely sliding over it. Then they veered to my left, went over the ridge and were gone.

Scope Throw Levers

Scope throw levers are a modern convenience for shooters and hunters. Especially shooters who require fluid transitions and faster target acquisition when alternating between short and long range. And hunters who spend a lot of time in the hardwoods with gloves on their hands where contact with the magnification ring, as we talked about above, can prove difficult.

One might say it’s almost as much of a mental convenience as it is a physical one. Simply knowing you’re capable of quickly adjusting the magnification can provide peace of mind as you get ready for a shooting competition or sit stand all day during the rut.

Fluid & Fast Scope

Scope throw levers help shooters and hunters become more fluid as the need to transition quickly between targets arises. They also allow for faster target acquisition by giving you the ability to zoom out and back in one smooth motion.

In the past year, we’ve talked about how one may get into shooting competitively on the Precision Rifle Series (PRS). As for the gear list, we mentioned a rifle and a rest and of course good optics. But one thing we failed to call out that could significantly impact your time is a scope throw lever. Again, it could be a mental advantage as well as a physical one. Knowing you have the ability to quickly adjust could help you slow down a beat which in turn could result in better shots and higher scores.

In a hunting scenario, take a coyote hunter on the western plains. He or she will need to be able to shoot efficiently both in close and out long as well as effectively pick up target number two when multiple coyotes come to the call. Quick magnification changes equal faster target engagements when you can quickly widen your field of view then hone back in on the target.

Ease of Use

Scope throw levers are relatively inexpensive pieces of gear that are easy to install on your rifle scope. With the scope mounted to the rifle, simply slip it over the eyepiece, line up the notch on the lever with the raised area of the magnification ring, and tighten with an allen wrench. Make your magnification changes with a finger or two rather than the whole hand.

We partnered with MK Machining to provide customers with a branded scope throw lever option to match the magnification rings of our TORIC and TEKOA rifle scopes. They’re made from a custom nylon blend and feature a metal thread insert for increased strength while tightening. Quickly go from 4.5-30 power with the flick of a thumb.
