Explaining the Stages of the Bull Moose Rut From Start to Finish

Welcome to a very special Moose & Coffee! We have fun everyday on here with all of you, but some days are special presentations and today is one of those days. We have worked for weeks putting this feature together with the intent being to explain the stages of the mating season and how it progresses one stage to the next.

Libby will narrate the entire piece so there is no need for me to do the “explaining” part here. Before I share my thoughts on today’s movie I want to say how grateful we both are for all the support in what is called “watch time”, comments, and questions, but even more for the enthusiasm so many of you bring to this continuing adventure. We’re so thankful for our lifestyle and being able to build this fan page to sustain our way of life.

The Rut! You’ve heard me say it before, I love the slow progression of it. After eight straight years of studying it, that’s still my favorite part. The patience of the bulls is fascinating to us. Each dominant bull has his own style of rutting and watching those differences makes us stop and admire. And then there’s the young bulls. Watching them sneak around looking for openings, and documenting some of them as they grow a year older each rut is particularly enjoyable. And of course, the wonderful cow moose. They ultimately run the show, there’d be no rut without them. As you watch today, keep in mind some stages last longer than others, with the practice sparring that occurs immediately after velvet shedding being very brief. Fighting can happen during the entire rut and beyond, once the antler velvet is shed. There’s so many cool things to it.
Today’s video is longer than usual, and we think you’ll enjoy it from start to finish.

Thanks for watching our channel, we are the husband/wife team of Rick and Libby Libbey, (Libby squared), New Hampshire wildlife photographers (and part time Alaska.) It is our passion to document wildlife of any kind, but moose are definitely at the top. In New Hampshire we spend a lot of our spring/summer hours in kayaks photographing loons and moose in the waters of New Hampshire. And hike many miles in Alaska seeking all manner of wildlife in the fall.
