Wildlife OnVideo Aggressive mountain goats

Mountain goats in the Canadian Rockies are very aggressive towards each other, unlike other ungulates. Female mountain goats are dominant, except during the autumn rut when the males compete. Females, the most aggressive of the sexes, can have many aggressive interactions per hour.

In the populations studied in Alberta, Canadian female mountain goats averaged 3.4 aggressive interactions per hour when in a group, the highest number for any wild female ungulate measured. Mountain goats show their aggressiveness by arching their backs and showing their side profile to appear larger. They can often rush at an opponent or push him slowly as they walk. Mountain goat fights don’t usually reach extreme levels.

Although the bighorn sheep is capable of snatching just about anything from a mountain ridge, when occupying the same area as the mountain goat, the bighorn usually gives way to the more aggressive mountain goat. Find out more about Rocky Mountain goats…
