In this bowmaking video, Clay Hayes takes you step-by-step through the process of making a hickory bow, from bow design to tillering to using our new longbow. This is a complete guide to bow making for beginners. We start with a small hickory bow stave and use very few bow-building tools to make this wooden bow. These techniques can be used to manufacture curved, long and flat bows. For this construction, we’ll be using a drawknife and a farrier’s rasp for most of the work. We start by using the penknife to remove the bark and cambium from the bow stave, then use a chalk line to mark the center. We lay out a 64-inch longbow and rough it out before we start tensioning the bow.
