Clay Hayes Hunter Surviving the WORST storm of my life while bear hunting in Idaho!
It’s bear hunting season in the western states, and this week Coye and I got ready to hike and camp in the Idaho wilderness for a few days. The gravel road leading to the trailhead was snow-covered and we ended up hiking a few kilometers before crossing the main trail. There’s still a lot of snow in the high country, but the southern slopes are clearing and turning green, which should attract bears. We set up camp on an open ridge, hoping to have a good vantage point for the early morning and late evening. Although the weather forecast predicted only a slight risk of rain, we soon realized that the weather channel had been wrong. We reinforced the tent pegs and re-buttoned the camp as ominous clouds gathered on the western horizon. Shortly after nightfall, thunder and lightning came closer together.

When the storm finally arrived, it struck with incredible force, driving the rain and wind right up to the tent and threatening to sweep it away. Lightning flashed from all sides and the thunder boomed so loud we had to cover our ears. We were within reach, but we had to shout to communicate with each other. It was the worst storm of my camping life. When we left, camping in a thunderstorm with lightning and heavy rain was not in our plans. But now that it’s over, I think it’s something we’ll both remember for the rest of our lives. #campinginrainstorm #bearhunting #backpackhunting

We make the best traditional archery, bow making, recurve hunting, craftsmanship and survival videos on the web. Join Clay, Liz and the kids on their outdoor adventures, from bowhunting deer and elk in the mountains of Idaho to hunting wild hogs in Florida, and practicing crafts and survival skills. We hunt and fish because we love it, but it’s also how we get most of our meat. Hunting is our way of life. We also cultivate a large garden on our Idaho property. This, combined with hunting, fishing and gathering, is how we obtain most of our food.
