Clay Hayes Hunter Primitive bow from a living tree in 24 hours!
This week, we’re building a primitive whitewood bow from a living tree in less than 24 hours! After watching a video when Keith Shannon and Thad Beckum made a beautiful, high-performance bow from green hickory in just three days, I wanted to give it a try. So I went out and cut up a small American elm and started making a flat bow. In just a few hours, I had the bow roughed out and started bending it. Once the branches had cleared, I built a long fire, hung the bow over the heat and covered it with canvas to create a primitive kiln. The next morning, the stave’s moisture content was below 10%, and it was ready to move on to tillering. A few more hours and the primitive survival bow was ready to hunt! I’ve built a lot of primitive bows over the years, but I’d never tried to force wood to dry like this. I was impressed, to say the least. Not only was this bow fast and easy to make, but it has no string tracking and shoots very well. In short, it’s a bow that shoots well and that I’d feel confident using to hunt big game. game. If you’re looking for a way to make the best survival bow possible, this Don’t forget to subscribe to our channel. Every week we post a new video on one of the following subjects: archery, hunting archery, bow building, survival techniques, bushcraft, self-reliance, primitive techniques, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and much more! We make the best traditional archery, bow making, recurve hunting, craftsmanship and survival videos on the web. Join Clay, Liz and the kids on their outdoor adventures, from bowhunting deer and elk in the mountains of Idaho to hunting wild hogs in Florida, and practicing crafts and survival skills. We hunt and fish because we love it, but it’s also how we get most of our meat. Hunting is our way of life. We also cultivate a large garden on our Idaho property. This, combined with hunting, fishing and gathering, is how we obtain most of our food.
